History of Friendship Day

There is not much literature on Friendship Day history as we celebrate today. Nevertheless, there are numerous folktales and several, for example, in mythological legends that shows that friends and friendship have been valued since the beginning of the civilized world. As intrinsically social creature, men love to make friends, to continue this process of socialization.

Given the valuable role friends play in our lives, it was considered to correspond to a day dedicated to friends and friendship. The United States Congress, in 1935, proclaimed first Sunday of August as the National Friendship Day. Since then, the celebration of the national holiday of friendship has become an annual event. The noble idea of honoring the beautiful relationship of friendship caught on with people and soon Friendship Day became a very popular festival.

After the popularity and success of the Friendship Day in the United States, other countries adopted the tradition of day to devote to your friends. Today, Friendship Day celebrated with enthusiasm in some countries around the world, including India.

In 1997, the United Nations named Winnie - the Pooh as a Peace Ambassador of Friendship.


The importance of friendship in the Bible
The Bible, the basic text of Western civilization, reflects upon friendship as a relationship that is the basis for human faith, trust and companionship. Following verses from the Bible accurately portray the importance of friends:

"Ask and it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you."
Matthew 7:7

"Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends."
John 15:13-15

In addition, there are a few stories from the Old Testament and New Testament about the value of friendship and how true friendship is a treasure to unearth. The noticeable thing is how to make the difference between the two versions of the broad meaning of friendship, it is just familiar, others are more affectionate relationship.

In the Old Testament, Abraham is called a "friend of God" because of the closeness of his relationship. God speaks to Moses face to face "like a man ... unto his friend" (Exodus 33:11). Romantic friendship of Ruth and Naomi, loyalty of subordinates Hushai for David, or the relationship between David and Jonathan - the Old Testament is replete with these interesting stories about friends and friendship.

The Importance of Friendship in Mahabharata
